Exploding the Myths about the American Family The American family is dying .The highest divorce rate in history indicates that marriage is being unpopular. Most young people today have no intention of marrying and raising a family. More and more
working women abandon their children to babysitters or day-care centers.
What you’ve just read sounds true, doesn’t it? But it’s all false. A new study reveals that the American family is stronger than ever. This study, conducted by Br. Mary Joe Bane, analyzes past and
current census data and other sociological research about the American family.
Dr. Bane says, “I started my research with the idea that the American family was going to hell and needed to be replaced by some new child-care
institutions. I wanted to prove this with statistics. I believed all the myths, but statistics showed that the American family wasn’t dying.” Dr. Bane’s study and several others shatter many of the myths about the American family. Let’s take a look at some of the myths--and the fact that refute them
Myth 1: THE AMERICAN FAMILY IS DYING BECAUSE OF THE SOARING DIVORCE RATE.
The American family is changing, not dying: It is being smaller, women are being more equal, and the divorce rate is high. But Dr. Bane says that, despite the high divorce rate, “marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people remarry, but only 2% marry more than twice. In the United States, most marriages are not fly-by-night, and people don’t continually change partners without marriage. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are from teenage marriages. Depending on the specific situation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up.”
Myth 2: WORKING MOTHERS ARE WRECKING THE FAMILY BY NEGLECTING THEIR CHILDREN. .
“There’s no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home,” says Dr. Bane. “You have to divide the time into different
categories: simple physical and custodial function and educational time or development time when a mother plays with the child. So far we haven’t seen the
amount of educational or development time varies much, whether or not the mother works outside the home.” In fact, Dr. Bane finds evidence that working mothers--especially in the middle class--try to
pensate for working by, setting aside time exclusively for their children “They probably read more to their children and spend more time in planned activities with them than nonworking mothers do,” says Dr. Bane. In her book, Here to Stay: American Families in the Twenty First Century, Or. Bane says, “Television--not working mothers--is by far the most significant new child-care arrangement of this century. The most important activity for children up to age 14 is
watching television. The average preschooler watches TV about 33 hours a week, one-third of his waking
hours. The average sixth grader watches about 31 hours of television a week.”
School is the second most time-consuming activity for children. They spend an average of about 19 hours a week in school. A larger proportion of children go to school now than ever before, and they stay in
school longer. Another big change is the proportion of
very young children enrolled in nursery schools and kindergartens: from 27% in 1965 to 41% in 1973. Compared with these two dramatic changes in child activity-greater hours devoted to television and to school--the changes caused by mothers working outside the home “appear almost trivial,” according to Dr. Bane.

Directions: Read the following passages carefully and choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D. Passage 1
A boy between the ages of 6 and 14 still admires his mother and has plenty to learn from her.
But his interests are changing—he is being more interested in what men have to offer. A boy knows he is turning into a man. He has to learn from a man to plete his development.
The father's job is to step in over time. If there is no father around, then the child must depend on other men in places such as school. This is happening more frequently and would not be such a problem if there were more male teachers at primary school for boys to look up to.
Children need a lot of extra support. Throughout primary school years and into high school, boys should spend a lot of time with their fathers and mothers, getting their help, learning how to do things, and enjoying their pany.
With regard to feelings, at this stage the father is more important. The boy is ready to learn from his father and listens to what he has to say. Often he will take more notice of his father. It's enough to drive a mother wild!
Now is a good time for a father to do \"little\" things, like playing in the yard on summer evenings, going for walks, telling stories about life, telling him about his own youth, working on hobbies, or playing sports together for enjoyment. This is the time when good memories are created that will be healthy for the son, as well as for the father, for years to e.
Although every boy is different, it's mon for boys at this age to get a little argumentative (好争论的), restless, and moody (闹情绪). It's not that they are turning bad—just that they are being born into a new self and birth always means struggle.
I believe this is the age when we fail teenagers the most. In our society all we offer those in their middle teens is \"more of the same\school. So it's little wonder that problems arise. But if parents, and fathers in particular, pay close attention to their sons, fewer problems will arise. 16.
According to the passage a boy needs the help of _________ to develop well. A. his mother only B. his father only
C. neither his mother nor his father D. both his mother and father
17.
One problem for a boy's development is that ________.
A. there are few men teaching in primary schools B. there are few women teaching in primary schools C. the boy's interests are changing D. the boy wants to act as a man 18.
A good time for a father to have an influence on his son is ________. A. when the boy is 14
B. when the boy is at primary school C. from about age 6 to the 14th birthday D. from when the boy was born 19.
By the middle teens boys argue often with their parents. This means ________. A. they are turning bad B. they are turning good
C. they are being born into new selves D. they are rebelling against their parents
A. they are turning bad B. they are turning good
C. they are being born into new selves D. they are rebelling against their parents 20.
The main idea of this passage is that ________. A. fathers play a large role in raising boys B. mothers should feel fortable when their sons' interests are changing.
C. without fathers mothers can raise good men D. fathers should stay with their sons as much as possible Passage 2
On a practical level, teachers need a wide variety of skills and abilities. They have to be ready to spend many hours at home planning their lessons and preparing homework. They have to be well organized in class, patient with students, able to appear bright and interested even if they are in fact tired or
unhappy, and lively enough to control a group of young people for almost 200 days a year. Outside the
classroom, they may have to prepare teaching materials, to choose books to use as texts, to help organize the
work of other teachers, or to organize spare time activities for students.
If you think that you have all the necessary qualities, you may feel that you would like to be a teacher. One way to decide, if you live in the United States, is by joining a club for future teachers, such as Student Action for Education. Clubs like this give advice about your field, and also allow you to watch teachers at work, attend meetings, and experiment with teaching methods and equipment. You could also talk with the job advisor at your school or university. Finally, you could try teaching a younger student or being an advisor at a summer camp for children. Any activity in which you are dealing with children will help you decide whether you have a calling for teaching. 21.
The first paragraph is mainly about ________. A. how to plan lessons and prepare homework
B. how to help organize the work of other teachers C. how to prepare teaching materials
D. various skills and abilities teachers need 22.
