1.Scope
1.1Thisspecification2coversagroupofgeneralrequire-mentsthat,unlessotherwisespecifiedinanindividualspeci-fication,shallapplytotheASTMproductspecificationsnotedbelow.
1.2Inthecaseofconflictbetweenarequirementofaproductspecificationandarequirementofthisspecification,theproductspecificationshallprevail.Inthecaseofconflictbetweenarequirementoftheproductspecificationorarequirementofthisspecificationandamorestringentrequire-mentofthepurchaseorder,thepurchaseordershallprevail.

6.1MethodofMechanicalTests—ThespecimensandthemechanicaltestsrequiredshallbeinaccordancewithTestMethodsandDefinitionsA370,especiallyAnnexA2thereof.6.2Specimensshallbetestedatroomtemperature.
6.3SmallorsubsizespecimensasdescribedinTestMeth-odsandDefinitionsA370maybeusedonlywhenthereisinsufficientmaterialtoprepareoneofthestandardspecimens.Whenusingsmallorsubsizespecimens,thelargestonepossibleshallbeused.
7.TensileRequirements
7.1Thematerialshallconformtotherequirementsastotensilepropertiesintheindividualproductspecification.
7.2Theyieldstrength,whenspecified,shallbedeterminedcorrespondingtoapermanentoffsetof0.2%ofthegagelengthortoatotalextensionof0.5%ofthegagelengthunderload.7.3Ifthepercentageofelongationofanytestspecimenislessthanthatspecifiedandanypartofthefractureismorethan3⁄4in.[19.0mm]fromthecenterofthegagelength,asindicatedbyscribemarksonthespecimenbeforetesting,aretestshallbeallowed.
8.PermissibleVariationinWeightforSeamlessPipe
8.1Exceptasnotedin8.2,theweightofanylengthofseamlesspipeNPS12andundershallnotvarymorethan10%overthe3.5%underthatspecified.ForsizesoverNPS12,theweightofanylengthofpipeshallnotvarymorethan10%overand5%underthatspecified.Unlessotherwisespecified,pipeofNPS4andsmallermaybeweighedinconvenientlots;pipeinsizeslargerthanNPS4shallbeweighedseparately.8.2MinimumWall—Whenthewallthicknessofthepipeisspecifiedasminimumwallinthepurchaseorder,theweightofanylengthofseamlesspipeshallnotvarymorethan16%overthatcalculatedinaccordancewith13.3.Unlessotherwisespecified,pipeofNPS4andsmallermaybeweighedinconvenientlots;pipeinsizeslargerthanNPS4shallbeweighedseparately.

beingwelded.Defectsshallbethoroughlychippedorgroundoutbeforeweldingandeachrepairedlengthshallbereheattreatedorstressrelievedasrequiredbytheapplicablespecifi-cation.Eachlengthofrepairedpipeshallbenondestructivelytestedasrequiredbytheproductspecification.
16.2RepairweldingshallbeperformedusingproceduresandweldersorweldingoperatorsthathavebeenqualifiedinaccordancewiththeASMEBoilerandPressureVesselCode,SectionIX.17.Retests
17.1Iftheresultsofthecertificationtestsofanylotdonotconformtotherequirementsspecifiedintheindividualspeci-fication,retestsmaybemadeonadditionallengthsofpipeofdoubletheoriginalnumberfromthesamelot,eachofwhichshallconformtotherequirementsspecified.Onlyoneretestofanylotwillbepermitted.Nonconformancewillbecausefortherejectionofthelot.
17.2Anyindividuallengthofpipethatmeetsthetestrequirementsisacceptable.Individuallengthsthatdonotconformtothetestrequirementsmayberesubmittedfortestprovidedthereasonfornonconformanceisestablishedandthenonconformingportionremoved.18.Retreatment
18.1Ifindividuallengthsofpipeselectedtorepresentanylotfailtoconformtothetestrequirements,thelotrepresentedmaybereheattreatedandresubmittedfortest.Themanufac-turermayreheattreatthepipe,butnotmorethantwice,exceptwiththeapprovalofthepurchaser.19.TestSpecimens

20.2WeldedPipe—Asectionofweldedpipenotlessthan4in.[100mm]inlengthshallbeflattenedcoldbetweenparallelplatesintwosteps.Theweldshallbeplacedat90°fromthedirectionoftheappliedforce(atthepointofmaximumbending).Duringthefirststep,whichisatestforductility,nocracksorbreaksontheinsideoroutsidesurfaces,exceptasprovidedforin20.3.4,shalloccuruntilthedistancebetweentheplatesislessthanthevalueofHcalculatedbyEq2.Duringthesecondstep,whichisatestforsoundness,theflatteningshallbecontinueduntilthespecimenbreaksortheoppositewallsofthepipemeet.
20.3Seamless,CentrifugallyCast,andWeldedPipe:
20.3.1Evidenceoflaminatedordefectivematerialorweldthatisrevealedatanytimeduringtheentireflatteningtestshallbecauseforrejection.
20.3.2Surfaceimperfectionsnotevidentinthetestspeci-menbeforeflattening,butrevealedduringthefirststepofflatteningtest,shallbejudgedinaccordancewiththefinishrequirements.
20.3.3Superficialrupturesresultingfromsurfaceimperfec-tionsshallnotbeacauseforrejection.
20.3.4WhenlowD-to-tratiotubularproductsaretested,becausethestrainimposedduetogeometryisunreasonablyhighontheinsidesurfaceatthesixandtwelveo’clocklocations,cracksattheselocationsshallnotbecauseforrejectioniftheD-to-tratioislessthan10.21.NondestructiveTestRequirements
21.1Whenrequiredbytheapplicableproductspecificationorthepurchaseorder,thepipeshallbetestedbythehydrostatictest(see21.2)orbythenondestructiveelectricaltest(see21.3).
21.2HydrostaticTest:
21.2.1Exceptasprovidedin21.2.2and21.2.3,eachlengthofpipeshallbetestedbythemanufacturertoahydrostaticpressurewhichwillproduceinthepipewallastressnotlessthan60%oftheminimumspecifiedyieldstrengthforferriticalloyandstainlesssteelpipe,or50%ofthespecifiedmini-mumyieldstrengthforausteniticalloyandstainlesssteelpipeandforferritic/austeniticstainlesssteelpipe.Thetestpressureorstressshallbedeterminedbythefollowingequation:

21.2.3Withconcurrenceofthemanufacturer,aminimumhydrostatictestpressureinexcessoftherequirementsof21.2or21.1,orboth,maybestatedontheorder.
21.2.4Thetestpressureshallbeheldforaminimumof5s.Forweldedpipe,thetestpressureshallbeheldforatimesufficienttopermittheentirelengthoftheweldedseamtobeinspected.
21.2.5Thehydrostatictestmaynotbecapableoftestingtheendportionofthepipe.Thelengthofpipethatcannotbetestedshallbedeterminedbythemanufacturerand,whenspecifiedinthepurchaseorder,reportedtothepurchaser.21.3NondestructiveElectricTest:

22.1Theinspectorrepresentingthepurchasershallhaveentryatalltimesworkonthecontractofthepurchaserisbeingperformed,toallpartsofthemanufacturer’sworksthatconcernthemanufactureofthematerialordered.Themanu-facturershallaffordtheinspectorallreasonablefacilitiestosatisfyhimthatthematerialisbeingfurnishedinaccordancewiththisspecification.Allrequiredtestsandinspectionshallbemadeattheplaceofmanufacturepriortoshipment,unlessotherwisespecified,andshallbeconductedsoasnottointerfereunnecessarilywithoperationoftheworks.
23.Rejection
23.1Eachlengthofpipereceivedfromthemanufacturermaybeinspectedbythepurchaserand,ifitdoesnotmeettherequirementsofthespecificationbasedontheinspectionandtestmethodasoutlinedinthespecification,thelengthmayberejectedandthemanufacturershallbenotified.Dispositionofrejectedpipeshallbeamatterofagreementbetweenthemanufacturerandthepurchaser.
23.2Pipethatfailsinanyoftheformingoperationsorintheprocessofinstallationandisfoundtobedefectiveshallbesetasideandthemanufacturershallbenotifiedformutualevaluationofthesuitabilityofthepipe.Dispositionofsuchpipeshallbematterforagreement.
24.CertifiedTestReport
24.1Whenspecifiedinthepurchaseorderorcontract,theproducerorsuppliershallfurnishacertifiedtestreportcerti-fyingthatthematerialwasmanufactured,sampled,tested,andinspectedinaccordancewiththespecification,includingyeardate,thesupplementaryrequirements,andanyotherrequire-mentsdesignatedinthepurchaseorderorcontract,andtheresultsmettherequirementsofthatspecification,thesupple-mentaryrequirementsandtheotherrequirements.Asignatureornotarizationisnotrequiredonthecertifiedtestreport,butthedocumentshallbedatedandshallclearlyidentifytheorganizationsubmittingthereport.(SeeNote4.)
